| Broome and Tioga Counties Broome County, which includes the city of Binghamton, has a population of just over 200,000, based on the 2010 Census. The Binghamton metro area also includes Tioga County, with a much sparser population of 51,000. The population in these two counties was little changed between 2000 and 2010. Metropolitan Binghamton lags the state and the nation in income and educational attainment. Based on 2009 data, median household income is just under $46,000, versus $50,000 for the US. Despite the dominant presence of Binghamton University (SUNY), just under 25 percent of Binghamton-area adults hold college degrees—slightly below the nationwide rate of 27½ percent. The region has a sizable presence of computer & electronics and defense-related manufacturing, though less so than in the past. During this past recession, the Binghamton area registered a job loss of roughly 6 percent—steeper than for New York State as a whole but roughly on par with the nation. By the end of 2010, Binghamton had yet to see any significant upturn in employment. Home prices did not appreciate nearly as rapidly as in the nation as a whole during the 2000-2006 housing boom, but neither did they decline very sharply thereafter: prices fell by roughly 5 percent during 2008 and then by another 10 percent in 2010 .
Recent Trends In the first half of 2011, the Binghamton metropolitan area saw only modest job growth—both in the private sector and in government. In contrast with much of New York State, Binghamton’s manufacturing sector added jobs in the first half of 2011. Professional & business services, education & health services and trade, transportation & utilities have also contributed to overall job gains. Home prices in metropolitan Binghamton held steady at or near cyclical lows during the first half of 2011. ________________________________ 1Trends in home prices referred to here are all based on repeat-sales indexes from CoreLogic. | | Binghamton MSA*: selected characteristics | | | | | Population in 2010 | % of 2010 Population that is1 | | | | | | Total Population1 | % Change from 20001 | per Sq.
